When Andri put a teaser of Mas Chris as his Blackberry's profile pic, I went ahead and asked if it's for sale, and to my surprise, he told me that a very limited quantity will be made and it is indeed for sale. So I went ahead and put my name down for one.
Mas Chris came and knock on my door out of Christmas, but he definitely bring Christmas joy with him. Packed in a very well made tin can, with smiling snowman face on top, and a simple "Have yourself a Dunny Little Christmas on the side" (I think I will!), it shows that Andri took close attention even when it comes to packaging, and I just loveee a good packaging.
Other than a great outside packaging, Andri really took care of the inside packaging as well, making sure that Mas Chris will arrive safe and sound. Beside thick padding around and on top of Mas Chris, Mas Chris also wrapped in another soft cloth, which won't ruin or stick to the paint.
I'm lucky enough that Andri has set aside some time from his busy schedule for a short interview. The original interview was in Indonesian, but is translated to english for your convenience.
My first custom piece was actually a Munny. I made it to join the custom Munny competition held by Loubelle Bandung back in 2009. It was there where I met other Indonesian customizer for the very first time. Didn't win though. I created a custom and called it Dipsy Diver. It was about a small diver boy who care about the environment, and he cleaned the sea from rubbish and industrial waste.
What is your favourite, most proud of piece that you made?
If you ask me which one I most proud of, I didn't really know which, since I've always put a full heart and effort to all of my customs. But there's one piece that I'm particularly proud of, and that's Dayak Munny. Even though I only came as 2nd place for the headdress category at the World Munny Festival 20120, but I'm really proud because the one judging was Paul Budnitz, the owner of Kidrobot.
My inspiration came from everywhere and can be anytime, while watching movies, reading magazines and books, sleeping, and during daydreaming (haha). About what method, well, it's a long process. In short, I get my idea, make it into sketch. After sketch, since I have a graphic design background, I will create the vector artwork in the computer, as well as color combination. After all the design is finalized, I then applied it to the dunny.
About this new 3” Mas Chris, what’s his story?
Basically, I really like Christmas. When I was small, I remember watching the Donald Duck Christmas edition cartoon where he fought with Chip and Dale in a room full of presents. I created a character more or less like me, an adult with a christmas spirit in my heart, not only during Christmas, but all year long. The outfit is a combination of things I like, like those army toys we found during Christmas, his hat is inspired from snowman. Named Mas Chris, because I want an Indonesian name, also, if you say Mas Chris rapidly over-and-over again, it will become "Christmas". Try it.
Are you planning for another release in near future?Another release? I have A LOT of ideas in my head that I really want to make it into an actual figure, but again, there's always problem with time. Since I'm currently working, customizing is something I did in my spare time, and there's only Saturday and Sunday for that. Not only that, since I'm a married man, my family came first on the weekend.
Who is your favourite toy artist? Or who inspire you the most?I have lots of artist that inspire me, so it's hard to say only one
5 Words to describe your styleSimple, clean, catchy, colourful, cute. Actually, I'm interested to know what people think about my style, since I'm curious what people enjoy most about my custom pieces.
Where can we see your other works, or where do you usually “hang-out”?
Do visit my Trampt page
Are you considering to move to another platform besides Dunny?
I don't really limit myself as for platform sake, but up til now, I've most familiar with munny or dunny, since frankly, those two platforms is the easiest to find in Indonesia. Maybe if there's another artist who launched a DIY platform and would like to invite me for a collaboration
work, I would gladly accept it.
And there you go, an interview with the creator of Mas Chris, Kong Andri. As far as I know, 3" Mas Chris has long sold out, but don't worry, I'm looking forward for another release by Kong Andri (hint: Owange Bot) so do wait for more to come.
